Dedicated to the
collecting, research and writing about the financial instruments of
Southeast Asia, the political, economic and banking history related to
their issue, non-issue and/or use, and the sharing of this knowledge
with all interested persons.
Southeast Asia includes the past and present
countries of Viet Nam, Cambodia, Lao (Laos), Thailand (Siam), Myanmar
(Burma), Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines.
These countries also had several foreign powers in or colonizing them.
They were China, England, France, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Portugal,
Spain and the United States. After Spain lost control of its colonies
in Latin America, many of the coins of its former colonies also
circulated in Southeast Asia.
The financial instruments herein include
legal tender coins and paper (polymer) money, and other pieces such as
tokens, scrip, postal money orders, stocks, bonds, bullion, checks,
ration coupons, lottery tickets, etc. There are also medals and
presentation pieces and odd and curious pieces such as charms,
amulets, weights and measures, and other pieces related to financial
instruments and commerce. These pieces were usually issued by
governments but they were also issued by the military, commercial firms
and individuals. Any of these pieces could also be authentic,
counterfeit or a reproduction, fantasy, altered, counterstamps,
overstamped and/or overprinted.
